CCTV Training Public Space Surveillance (PSS)
The regulatory authority in the United Kingdom as regards to private security is SIA (Security Industry Authority). The SIA has which works as a part of the home office has outlined that certain activities as regards to private security shall be termed as licensable. CCTV PSS is also a licensable activity meaning by that if you want to work as a CCTV operator you shall be required to take a licence from SIA.
What does CCTV PSS mean?
CCTV as most of you know is close circuit television, why do we call it close circuit is because the transmissions are not being broadcasted over the open media and access to those transmissions is limited to authorized personals. PSS is abbreviated for Public Space Surveillance meaning by that if you want to view and record the imagery of the members of public you are supposed to have a license by SIA.
How would you get a CCTV PSS license?
In order to qualify for a CCTV PSS operator you are required to undergo appropriate training. The training can be taken either by us or any other approved training provider by SIA. The training duration is normally 3 or 4 Days. What the training provider is supposed to ensure is that he meets the mandatory criteria of 27 hrs of contact time as advised by SIA (this 27 Hrs of contact time was prevalent at the time of publication of this article). The definition of contact time is the time that you spend in front of your tutor.
Once you have completed the CCTV training you shall be tested on the examination material provided by the concerned awarding body (different awarding bodies in the UK are Edexcel, EDI, Highfield, NOCN, City and Guilds etc) usually the examinations would be multiple choice questions.
What is included in the CCTV PSS Training Course?
The CCTV PSS operator training course is comprised of the following modules

CCTV PSS Operator Jobs
Once you have done the training and qualified for the Level 2 CCTV PSS operator award it shall take around 10 working days for your certificate to arrive from the awarding body. Once certified that you have successfully completed the CCTV Pss training you can apply to the SIA for your CCTV Licence. The question arises that would you be able to get a job as a CCTV operator, the answer is that it would be difficult. In order to penetrate in the industry the best combination that you would have to get a job is
CCTV Plus Door Supervisor and Emergency First Aid
The jobs for CCTV Pss operators include working at big complexes and public authorities such as council motorways control rooms etc, but to get a job in such an environment shall require experience. So what shall the above mentioned combination i.e. DS + CCTV + Emergency first aid give you, well it will guarantee you some sort of a job in the security industry. Nowadays if you go to Tesco asda etc you see a security guard standing to perform his duty that guard requires a security guarding or Door supervisor certificate and licence but you also see a small CCTV booth. The security guard standing there if he has to go and stand behind the booth he shall require a CCTV qualification as well.
Think from an employer’s point of view why he would want to employ two people for a job that can be done by one person. So this is what the above mentioned combination will get you. You shall be able to sell yourself more effectively to a prospective employer.
The CCTV public space surveillance course is designed for those people who intend to work in the public or private sector as CCTV operators, the CCTV course is a four day course which includes practical assessment at the end. In our opinion you should do the CCTV course coupled with the door supervisor course in this way you can save around 200 pounds on training and licensing costs.
Learner Entry Requirements
Security operatives are likely in the course of their work to be required to make calls to the emergency services, or need to communicate to resolve conflict. It is essential that security operatives are able to communicate clearly.
